Followers Natural Progression

Please join me for a unique class series that will teach followers how to lead. You will never have to sit when you really want to dance again!

Good followers have certain habits, and we’ll look at some of those, as well as what habits make a good leader; they are remarkably similar. You don’t need to learn many steps to have a good, solid lead and a lot of fun dances. Most leaders only use about six different moves anyway, maybe playing with variations, but they will replace one move they are comfortable with for every new move they are excited about and trying often. It’s just human habit to use what is familiar to us.

By the end of the series, you will:

  • have a pretty good understanding of the principles of leading,
  • learn a small bucket of useful steps and rhythms,
  • be able to assimilate different step patterns from other teachers with greater ease.
  • be able to enjoy both roles,
  • greatly improve your following and your understanding of tango
  • and have a fun time getting there!

We will be dancing with each other and switching roles so we can all experience both lead and follow. Please bring shoes with less than 2 inch heels (Cuban heels are very nice) as well as your regular dance shoes if desired.

Four Wednesdays beginning 2 September from 8-9pm, practica 9-10pm at Finnish Hall (main floor), 1970 Chestnut St, Berkeley, CA. $40 series, no drop-in.

Who it is for:
Tango followers with at least one year experience following Argentine tango. You are welcome whether you already lead a little and just want to get more comfortable, or if you’ve never led at all and want to give it a try. You should self-identify primarily as a follower, and when you think about tango, you mostly think about it as the follower. We will be building on skills and knowledge you already have!

Who it is NOT for:
Absolute tango beginners, no matter how much other dance experience you may have, including ballroom tango. This is also not a class for leaders who want to learn to follow. (But if there is enough interest, email me and I’ll set one up.)

Still undecided about it? I want to hear what’s holding you back. Please send me your questions: tropicalzen (dot) tango (at) gmail (dot) com. Or even better, register and comment here!
